Cost-Effective Large-Scale IoT solUtionS for energy efficient medium- and large-sized buildings

Building and energy management require extensive monitoring and sensing mechanisms within both the indoor and outdoor climate. This often results in large energy expenditure for heating and cooling with worldwide building consuming about 40% of the overall energy resources and contributing to approximately 1/3 of the global carbon emissions.

The CELSIUS project is a part of the global movement against climate change and aims to develop an integrated system solution which would improve the energy efficiency and indoor climate of medium to large sized public and commercial buildings.

Large scale adoption of IoT building management solutions

To achieve the aim of the project, the partner consortium will develop and test a novel IoT-enabled cloud-based solution that combines energy performance monitoring with fault detection and diagnostics. The new system will serve to reduce the excessive use of energy in buildings worldwide, usually caused by incorrect building management, or faulty building installations and equipment. Furthermore, the proposed solution will replace the current manually configured gateways and sensors with IoT-systems that can be auto-configured. This will, consequently, enable automated maintenance and large-scale deployment which would lead to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

Cost-efficiency and feasibility for large and medium buildings

Conventional building management solutions rely on wired sensors and are economically feasible only for large buildings. The solution proposed by CELSIUS is expected to reduce installation costs by eliminating the labor-intensive task of installing wires, thus making it suitable for medium sized buildings. Furthermore, the new solution will provide cost-effective deployment and maintenance of gateways and wireless sensors, making it more accessible for all building sizes.

The project will take place in Denmark and Malaysia as this would provide comparison of the environmental factors and ensure a realistic testing and evaluation of the proposed solution.

This CELSIUS project is made possible through the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP), part of the Danish Energy Agency. The CELSIUS project is estimated to run for two years – 2021 – 2023.

Develco Products in CELSIUS

As the primary IoT device and platform provider for this project, Develco Products will deploy a multitude of sensors and gateways on both testing sites. Furthermore, we will be tasked with configuring, monitoring, and evaluating the developed software.

Other technical objectives include:

  • Integrating an auto-pairing algorithm to the Squid.link software platform. This feature will enable Zigbee devices to automatically join the nearest Zigbee router, in this case the Squid.link gateway. By doing this, our partner SDU will be able to design an automatic configuration of a large-scale network.
  • Adding features to enable Fleet management of large scale IoT networks, such as software for monitoring sensor status and generating maintenance schedules, cloud-based backup system and OTA fleet management software
  • Cloud integration and testing with Microsoft Azure platform

Another objective of CELSIUS is to bridge the gap between scientific organizations and various businesses and enable cross-industry collaboration and future business opportunities.
