The importance of indoor air quality

The impact of VOCs

Indoor air quality is impacted by the concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are carbon-containing organic chemicals present in indoor air. VOCs come from various sources including building materials, paint, glues, furnishings, tobacco smoking, as well as people and their activities. 

Some VOCs can cause short- and long-term adverse health effects. The short-term effects include eye, nose and throat irritation, shortness of breath, nausea, headaches, and skin problems. Long-term exposure to high concentrations of VOCs may cause irritation of the lungs, and damage to the kidney, liver, or central nervous system. VOC emissions can especially affect those with existing medical conditions such as asthma.
